History of Coventory Congregation
On the14th of January 2018, Mrs Priscilla Young, a Ghanaian resident of Warwick, messaged one of the contact numbers on the Milton Keyne’s Church’s Facebook page to find out if there was a branch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Coventry. Discussions ensued between Mr Frederick Asare Labi, then caretaker of Milton Keynes Congregation, now Salem and Mrs Priscilla Young on a possible church planting in Coventry. Around the same time Mr Ferdinand Martinson approached Mr Frederick Asare Labi about the same issue, as requested by Ms Margaret Yeboah who had relocated from Milton Keynes to Coventry. Rev Joseph Oduro informed Salem session that he had also been contacted by Rev Sampson Amankwah, the Italy and Spain District Minister regarding same issue. Rev Oduro advised the session that he was in contact with Ms Bernice Numekevor and Miss Dorcas Yeboah Donkor who resided in Coventry. Mr Frederick Asare Labi and Mr Ferdinand Martinson were appointed to coordinate planting a church in Coventry.
The first meeting was held on 17th June 2018 at Ms Numekevor’s residence. The meeting was attended by Mr Frederick Asare Labi, Mr Ferdinand Martinson, Mr Duah Kyeremateng all from Salem Congregation, Miss Bernice Numekevor and her children, Wendy Oyatey, Manuel Oyatey and Joy Oyatey. On 20th August 2018, Rev. Joseph Oduro asked if Mrs Gifty Aboagye, then caretaker of Wolverhampton Preaching Point would be willing to help to find a place of worship for the new Presby Church in Coventry. Mrs Gifty Aboagye secured a hall at Bell Green Community Centre on 21st August 2018. The church held its first meeting at the hall on 30th September 2018 from 1:30pm to 3:00pm. Those in attendance were, Catechist Frederick Asare Labi, Mr Ferdinand Martinson, Mr Duah Kyeremateng, Miss Bernice Numekevor and her children, Miss Dorcas Yeboah Donkor, Alvin Yeboah Boateng, Miriam Boateng and Divine Boahemaa Donkor.
Mrs. Gifty Aboagye and her family became constant members from the second Sunday and contributed to the growth of the church. Rev Joseph Oduro went on pastoral visitation on 14th October 2018 and had their first communion service with them. Catechist Akwasi Bempong also contributed to the growth of the church. On 26th of January 2019, the church embarked on its first evangelism at Coventry City Centre. Those who participated were Rev (Mrs) Gifty Aboagye, Catechist Frederick Asare Labi, Mr Kwame Aboagye, Miss Bernice Numekevor, Miss Dorcas Yeboah Donkor, Mr David Tamakloe, Miss Maame Yaa Edjekoomhene (now Late), Miss Wendy Oyatey, Miss Joy Eyram Oyatey and Master Manual Oyatey.
In November 2019, Rev Joseph Oduro appointed Catechist Samuel Akuffo to be in charge of the Coventry Preaching Point. An Interim Management Committee was appointed to oversee the growth of the church. These were: Catechist. Samuel Akuffo, Mr Dennison Adu-Amoako (Treasurer), Mr George Amo Duodu (Clerk), Mr Geoffrey Kwayissi, Ms. Bernice Numekevor. Ms. Margaret Yeboah, Mrs. Doreen Quaye. The first singing group to be set up in the church was Church Choir. The members included Catechist Samuel Akuffo, Ms. Bernice Numekevor, Mrs Philippa Adu-Amoako and Mrs Doreen Quaye.
The church elected its first Presbyters on 30th April 2023: Mr Dennison Adu-Amoako, Dr. Evans Kwasi Gyasi, Mrs Doreen Quaye, Ms. Dorothy Koranteng, Ms. Lillian Amoo Ankah and Ms. Salome Akua Dankwa.
